ProdKit vs Cloudflare Images, set up yourself

Updated . Prices checked against the sources below.

ProdKit runs on Cloudflare: a Worker routes each request and Cloudflare Images does the resizing. So this isn't a quality comparison. It's about setup, the billing unit, and the tooling around the transformations.

Which one fits

Choose Cloudflare Images if

  • Your site already runs on Cloudflare and you're comfortable with zone settings.
  • You serve very high volume. At 100,000 images a month at 3 sizes each, Cloudflare directly costs about $147.50 in transformations, versus $241.50 on ProdKit.
  • You want Cloudflare's hosted image storage and variants as well.

Choose ProdKit if

  • Your app and bucket live elsewhere (Supabase, Vercel, a mobile app) and you don't want to move DNS.
  • You want a price per image and a dashboard per project, not transformation counts.
  • You want SDKs that build srcsets and typed URLs without writing a loader: React, Next.js, React Native, and Swift (coming soon).

What it costs each month

An app serving each image at 3 sizes, as AVIF and WebP, averaging 60 KB per optimized image.

Origin images a monthCloudflare ImagesProdKit
1,000$0$0 (Free)
4,000$3.50$9 (Starter)
15,000$20$29 (Pro)
100,000$147.50$241.50 (Pro)

Cloudflare Images: Transformation charges only, with each size counted once per month. Setup needs a domain on Cloudflare with transformations enabled. ProdKit: the cheapest plan that covers the volume, including overage.

What ProdKit adds on top of Cloudflare

ProdKit is a thin layer over Cloudflare's developer platform. Cloudflare does the work; ProdKit handles the parts you'd otherwise build.

  • Routing: one endpoint per project that only ever reads that project's bucket.
  • Cost controls: requested widths round to standard sizes, and generated sizes are kept in Cloudflare R2, so a size isn't transformed again next month.
  • Metering and billing per origin image, with a free plan that stops instead of billing.
  • SDKs for React, Next.js, React Native, and Swift (coming soon), plus a dashboard and request log per project.

Doing it yourself

Cloudflare transforms images through URLs on a zone you control. Enable transformations for the zone, allow your storage host as a source (by default only the same zone is allowed), then build URLs like the one below. Every distinct size is a unique transformation, billed once per calendar month.

Questions

Is ProdKit affiliated with Cloudflare?

No. ProdKit is an independent service built on Cloudflare's developer platform.

Is the image quality different?

No. Cloudflare Images produces the output in both cases.

Can I move to my own Cloudflare setup later?

Yes. Your originals never leave your bucket, and ProdKit's parameters (width, height, quality, fit, format, gravity) have the same names in Cloudflare Images.

Try it on your bucket

The free plan covers 1,000 origin images a month and never bills. Connect a public bucket and replace one URL.
